MEDIS Workshop
The International Research Centre CARDET in collaboration with the “Hope For Children” CRC Policy Centre organized a workshop through which they represented MEDIS Project along with the first phase of the project and the first findings from the ongoing research. The workshop took place on Thursday 21st of June 2018 at the Classic hotel in Nicosia.
The objectives of the workshop were the discussion of the concept of social inclusion/exclusion in schools along with the presentation of the first findings of the ongoing research of the first phase of the project. In addition, participants had the opportunity to learn more about the MEDIS handbook as well as the upcoming pilot interventions in schools.
What is more, the teachers who attended the workshop participated in a quick world café experiential workshop through which an effort was made to identify the following:
- Possible approaches for better integration of migrant students
- Pitfalls that are good to avoid
- Migrant students’ needs
- Educators’ needs in schools (in relation to the social inclusion of students/multicultural education)
The MEDIS project will be implementing activities with schools in an effort to strengthen and consolidate social inclusion in schools, intercultural education and local language in a multilingual context.

Multi-factorial model of Youth Radicalisation in Cyprus
Youth radicalisation has recently been emerging at increasing levels in Europe. In Cyprus, engagement with violent extremist movements of the same intensity or frequency as other countries in Europe, has not yet surfaced. Nonetheless, tendencies that relate to radicalisation such as racism, intolerance and hate crime have been reported.
The research for Cyprus was carried out within the framework of the YEIP project. A mixed methodology approach was adopted, the findings of which, having been analysed, led to the creation of a Multi-factorial Model of Youth Radicalisation. Primary and secondary data was collected from governmental departments, the National Strategy of Radicalization, but also from a National youth-led seminar on radicalisation. The seminar was attended by representatives of the public authorities and experts from research centres, the academic community and young people. The findings demonstrated that radicalisation in Cyprus is centered on:
- Education
- Prevention
- Awareness raising
- Countering
The Multi-factorial Model of Youth Radicalisation includes, among other factors, psycho-social education of young people on multiculturalism, respect and human rights, awareness- raising at all levels of society, the provision of positive alternatives for personal and social development, but also the creation of an open and active society that will effectively resist forms and expressions of radicalization. Using this model to shape and inform the current policies and practice regarding radicalisation in Cyprus is crucial to ensure that young people are at the front-line of tools that will help prevent radicalisation.

DROP-In: a new, youth-led project for early school leavers
The “DROP-In – Early School Leavers” new EU project seeks to establish alternative pathways for youth ESLs and drop outs, towards social inclusion and ultimately, the labour market. A modern, integrated and holistic e-learning and networking platform will be available for young drop-outs and ESLs across Europe while, on the same time, new and innovative methodologies will be introduced in order to enhance the basic and transversal skills of the specific group.
The involvement of the wider educational community, especially when it comes to non – formal training, will be essential as one of the project’s main goals is to enhance the quality and relevance of the learning offered. The project team of experts will work on bridging the gap between labour market and disadvantaged youth, by directly linking market demands to the needs and wishes of the target groups.
The DROP-In project is funded by Erasmus+ programme of the European Commission and will run for 24 months (September 2017 – August 2019). It is implemented by a scheme of 5 highly experienced partner organisations in 5 countries (UK, Romania, Greece, Cyprus, Italy), led by the IARS International Institute.
In Cyprus, the project is implemented by the Center for the Advancement of Research & Development in Educational Technology (CARDET).
DROP-In: ένα νέο έργο βασισμένο στη νεολαία για τα νεαρά άτομα που εγκατέλειψαν πρόωρα το επίσημο εκπαιδευτικό σύστημα
Το έργο ‘Drop-IN’ στοχεύει στη δημιουργία εναλλακτικών ευκαιριών για τους νέους που εγκατέλειψαν πρόωρα το σχολείο, όσον αφορά την κοινωνική τους ενσωμάτωση και την αγορά εργασίας. Μια σύγχρονη, ειδικά διαμορφωμένη και ολιστική πλατφόρμα δικτύωσης και ηλεκτρονικής μάθησης (e-learning) θα είναι διαθέσιμη και προσαρμοσμένη στις δεξιότητες, ικανότητες και τις ανάγκες των νεαρών ατόμων που έχουν εγκαταλείψει πρόωρα το επίσημο εκπαιδευτικό σύστημα και διαβιούν στην Ευρώπη.
Η συμμετοχή της ευρύτερης εκπαιδευτικής κοινότητας, ιδιαίτερα όσο αφορά την άτυπη κατάρτιση, θα είναι μεγάλης σημασίας, καθώς ένας από τους βασικούς στόχους του έργου είναι η ενίσχυση της ποιότητας και συνάφειας της μάθησης που προσφέρεται. Η ομάδα ειδικών του έργου θα εργαστεί για να γεφυρώσει το χάσμα μεταξύ της αγοράς εργασίας και των μειονεκτούντων νέων, συνδέοντας άμεσα τις ανάγκες της αγοράς εργασίας με τις ανάγκες και επιθυμίες των ομάδων-στόχου.
Το έργο χρηματοδοτείται από την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή και θα έχει διάρκεια 24 μηνών (Σεπτέμβριος 2017 – Αύγουστος 2019). Εφαρμόζεται από 5 οργανισμούς-εταίρους με μακρόχρονη εμπειρία σε 5 χώρες (Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, Ρουμανία, Ελλάδα, Κύπρος, Ιταλία), με συντονιστή το Διεθνές Ινστιτούτο IARS.
Στην Κύπρο, το έργο υλοποιείται από τον οργανισμό εκπαιδευτικής έρευνας και ανάπτυξης CARDET.

Παράδοση εκπαιδευτικού πακέτου με υποστηρικτικό υλικό για τους μαθητές που συμμετέχουν στο έργο ΓΕΙΑ ΧΑΡΑ!
Ο δεύτερος κύκλος των μαθημάτων ελληνικής γλώσσας στο πλαίσιο του έργου «ΓΕΙΑ ΧΑΡΑ» ξεκίνησε με επιτυχία τον περασμένο Νοέμβριο. Κατά τη φετινή σχολική χρονιά, με μεγάλη χαρά το Παιδαγωγικό Ινστιτούτο και ο οργανισμός CARDET παρέδωσαν τους μαθητές ένα ανανεωμένο εκπαιδευτικό πακέτο με υποστηρικτικό υλικό.
Συγκεκριμένα, κατά το 5ο μάθημα οι μαθητές παρέλαβαν το εκπαιδευτικό βιβλίο «ΓΕΙΑ ΣΑΣ 2» παράλληλα με τα «Κλειδιά της Ελληνικής Γραμματικής» με σκοπό την επιπλέον γλωσσική υποστήριξη εξωσχολικής μελέτης. Επιπλέον, κατά τη διάρκεια των μαθημάτων οι εκπαιδευτές δώρισαν στους μαθητές υποστηρικτικό υλικό, το οποίο περιλάμβανε ένα βιβλίο ασκήσεων, γραφική ύλη, όπως, επίσης και ένα USB.

The Video Tutorials for the Generativity Project are online!
They are finally online the tutorial focusing on IT tools to help you to become more effective on PCM targeted to social interventions: they are a series of “how-to” video materials, a very effective method used by open source communities, which proved to be for learning ICT tools. The tutorials cover the following aspects on how to work with online drives; create accounts and familiarize with different tools; create project in management software, inviting members; use the basic functions of management tools: communication with the team, task; management, file area; create and assign tasks including feedback mechanism; create Gantt chart; create sample project budget; use the workdays timesheets; import and export data; customize working environment, filtering and sorting, setting profile and notifications; use dissemination reporting and timesheets.
They are available in English with subtitles in all partner languages.
It is possible to collaborate with us by giving feedback on tutorials and modules by registering on the collaborate section of the platform.

“Generativity: Manage it” – Training Event
“Generativity: Manage it” project aims at fostering the social sector’s ability to develop and implement European projects, particularly focusing on Project Cycle Management (PCM).
After the launch of the online version of the six training modules on Project Cycle Management, CARDET invites you to a training event that aims to help learners on how to develop an effective and sustainable project. Specifically, on how to find suitable resources for turning ideas into projects, how to develop and write a proposal following Project Cycle Management and how to build up the necessary skills to successfully implement a project as a partnership.
The modules cover all the fundamental issues to lead you through a learning path to Project Cycle Management.
The main topics of the modules are:
- Module 1: financial & programmatic priorities of the EU2020 strategy within various programs
- Module 2: how to structure an innovative and sustainable project idea
- Module 3: building an international, national, local partnership
- Module 4: submission procedures according to the guidelines of the European Commission
- Module 5: implementation, evaluation, valorization, dissemination, exploitation of project results
The event will take place on Tuesday 13th of February 2018, at the Classic Hotel Nicosia, from 9 am to 1 pm.
Training event will follow complimentary meal.

Workshop for Raising Awareness on the life of Unaccompanied Minors
According to Eurostat (2017) in 2016, 63 300 asylum seekers applying for international protection in the Member States of the European Union (EU) were considered to be unaccompanied minors. Of the largest shares of unaccompanied minors among all young asylum applicants in 2016 was recorded notably in Cyprus, among other EU countries, reaching 32% percent. In order to promote a dialogue to schools about this issue CARDET in the framework of the E-EVALINTO project conducted a workshop at Palia Ilektriki in Pafos for raising awareness on the life of unaccompanied minors living in reception centres. During the workshop Primary School students had the opportunity to engage in a number of activities, discuss about the issue and reflect on their views and on what each of us can do at a personal level in order to support them.
The E-EVALINTO project aims to provide teachers with a framework for intercultural peer mentoring actions that support the integration of migrant students at school at a social and academic level.

Εργαστήριο για την Προώθηση της Ενσυναίσθησης σε Θέματα που Αφορούν τη Ζωή των Ασυνόδευτων Ανηλίκων
Σύμφωνα με την Eurostat (2017) το 2016, 63 300 αιτητές ασύλου, οι οποίοι έκαναν αίτηση για καθεστώς Διεθνούς Προστασίας στα κράτη-μέλη της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης ήτανε ασυνόδευτοι ανήλικοι. Από τα μεγαλύτερα ποσοστά ασυνόδευτων ανηλίκων μεταξύ όλων των νέων αιτούντων άσυλο το 2016 καταγράφηκαν και στην Κύπρο, μεταξύ άλλων χωρών της ΕΕ, φτάνοντας το 32%. Προκειμένου να προωθηθεί ο διάλογος στα σχολεία σχετικά με αυτό το ζήτημα, το ερευνητικό κέντρο CARDET, στο πλαίσιο του έργου E-EVALINTO, πραγματοποίησε ένα εργαστήριο στον χώρο της Παλιάς Ηλεκτρικής στην Πάφο για την ανάπτυξη της ευαισθητοποίησης σχετικά με τη ζωή των ασυνόδευτων ανηλίκων στα κέντρα υποδοχής. Κατά τη διάρκεια του εργαστηρίου μαθητές Πρωτοβάθμιας Εκπαίδευσης είχανε την ευκαιρία να συμμετάσχουν σε μια σειρά δραστηριοτήτων, να συζητήσουν για το θέμα, να εκφράσουν τις απόψεις τους και να προβληματιστούν για το τι μπορεί να κάνει ο καθένας μας σε προσωπικό επίπεδο για να τους υποστηρίξει.
Το έργο E-EVALINTO στοχεύει να προσφέρει στους εκπαιδευτικούς ένα πλαίσιο για την υλοποίηση διαπολιτισμικών δράσεων καθοδήγησης που υποστηρίζουν την ενσωμάτωση των μεταναστών στο σχολείο σε κοινωνικό και ακαδημαϊκό επίπεδο.
