Epsilon International Conference: “LGBT Refugees and Migrants: the Situation in Greece and Europe”

The International Conference: “LGBT Refugees and Migrants: the Situation in Greece and Europe” was held successfully in Athens on Tuesday, 9th May 2017, at the President Hotel, in the framework of the Erasmus+ funded project “EpsiLon: Equipping Professionals for Supporting LGBT Refugees”, a unique LGBTI-led project which is currently being implemented by five organizations and institutions from Greece (KMOP), Italy (ANS), Britain (IARS), the Netherlands (MOVISIE) and Cyprus (CARDET). The conference was organized by the Family and Childcare Centre (KMOP) and it was attended by more than 200 participants.

At the conference the findings of the first phase of the Epsilon project were presented, that follows in depth fieldwork involving LGBTI migrants, refugees and professionals that was carried out in 5 countries in Greece, the UK, the Netherlands, Italy and Cyprus.

CARDET, presented the situation of LGBTI refugees and migrants in Cyprus and outlined that Cyprus is a society that tends to build stereotypes around immigrants and refugees and almost all LGBTI migrants and refugees in the island are reluctant to reveal their sexual orientation to their own communities and consequently to the local population because they are afraid.

A common place for all speakers was that it is necessary to provide specialized support to LGBTI refugees and migrants , as well as better training to professionals (interpreters, legal and social workers) working with LGTBI migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. After all, the main aim of the program is to highlight the difficulties that LGBTI migrants and refugees are facing in these countries and to create innovative educational tools to support professionals.

The e-book Supporting and Including LGBTI Migrants: Needs, Experiences and Good Practices” can be downloaded for free here.

The integration of people immigrating presents a special challenge; it is a complex and long-term undertaking. Everyone should make an effort to foster the successful integration of immigrants. Those in favour of immigration are persons closely working with migrants, they represent educational sectors: teachers, trainers, educators; or social and care sectors: volunteers, social care workers, municipal guards, police etc.

The project SIMILAR aims at fostering integration of migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers through a multi-dimensional approach which includes multicultural approach and empowering measures in the areas of integration and social welfare.

The station represented the projects Epsilon, Lighthouse and CREATIVE.

The station represented the projects SUSY, ComBus and FYS-Forums.

Station 9. “We move together” – This station, dealing with Solidarity and Collaboration, asked the participants to test their knowledge by answering a knowledge quiz about the global reality of the refugees and a variation of the classic game “Guess Who?” where they had to test their understanding about population movements.
