HANDSON, CARDET’s two-year Erasmus+ project that aspires to develop a new innovative model and tools to support learners with special education needs (SEN), held its second partner meeting in Palma de Mallorca between the 17th to the 19th of June. The meeting served as an opportunity for the partners to discuss and evaluate the work and progress of the project and coordinate its next steps forward.

During the meeting, the partners delved into finalizing the Inclusive production-based learning model for SENs that HANDSON is developing along with the HANDSON eManual. Moreover, they deliberated on and planned the actions to be carried out for the creation of the HANDSON eKit and the Digital Learning Space and app generator. The project’s action plan unfolds as designed and the implementing partners believe that upon completing and delivering these outputs they will be providing VET Managers, educators, SEN learners and employers a bundle of innovative didactic resources that will aid and empower SEN learners’ path into employment.

HANDSON was designed to address the challenges SEN learners in Europe, estimated to be around 15 million. They often leave school with few qualifications and are consequently more vulnerable and liable to become unemployed or economically inactive. To that end, the project and its implementing partners are working towards identifying and developing new approaches and tools to improve the VET and WBL practices available to SEN learners to help enhance their capacity to get work placement opportunities.

CARDET represents the activities of the project in Cyprus.

Air It Nicosia Marathon

CARDET will organize, on the 21st of June, the ‘Air it Nicosia’ Marathon, which will take place as part of Cyprus’ most popular running event, ‘The Mall of Cyprus presents Running Under the Moon’. The race organized within the Project “Fostering resource efficiency and climate change resilience through community based Air Quality Internet of Things – AIRTHINGS” wishes to raise public awareness on air quality and its importance.

The race will be held in the city of Nicosia, in an area with intense traffic and therefore high pollutant emissions. The event features three distances that runners can choose from: 5km, 10km and half-marathon, while a part of the route will pass through Athalassa’s forest park which will be marked as the “clean air zone”. The event is expected to attract more than 500 participants who will also have the opportunity to be informed about air quality in Cyprus, its impact in our daily life and the importance of taking measures, implementing practices and activating public bodies in decision and policy making.

The AIRTHINGS Project is co-funded by the Transnational Cooperation Programme “Interreg V-B Balkan-Med 2014-2020” and seeks to foster sustainable development and mitigate climate change in the region through joint cooperation measures and transfer of experience between the six project partners. The main objective of the project is to put forward innovative and cost effective measures that national and regional authorities can take to ensure better air quality in urban areas as well as raise public awareness, so such policies and approaches are adopted.

VRInsight 2nd Transnational meeting at the University of Nicosia

VRinSight is about educating higher education teachers about Virtual Reality (VR). That is why, representatives from the partner organisations participated and discuss the progress of the project’s results:

  1. VRinSight Survey of Educators and SMEs,
  2. VRinSight Curriculum of learning modules,
  3. VRinSight Training Programme, and
  4. VRinSight Green Paper.

Specifically, representatives from the Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (Berlin), University of Nicosia (Cyprus), Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), Wakeone (Finland), Tampere University (Finland), Federación Vizcaína de Empresas del Metal (Spain), E.N.T.E.R. GmbH (Germany) attended the meeting and discuss the project’s next steps.

The E2 Roundtable

On March 27th CARDET in collaboration with the Institute of Development organised a Roundtable in Lefkosia, Cyprus foreseen within the BeOld project activities.

The participants were HR Managers and older workers representing public, private and non-profit organisations who were interested in learning more about supporting odler workers and organizational environment in coping with age transitions and work requirements.

The Roundtable structure was as follows:

  • Presentation of the BeOLD project (aims, objectives, outputs, activities, partners, financing program)
  • Working session 1: Utility and use of the Vocational counselling methodology for older workers ‘Better Work at Old Age”
  • Working session 2: Adapting to the aging workforce: The Training program for human resources managers, managers, coordinators, directors of organizations/institutions: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Working session 3: Older workers: challenges, opportunities and future directions
  • Working session 4: Questions and answers. Conclusions

At the event there were two trainers from CARDET, one trainer specialised in adult education and one trainer specialised in older workers.

Participants overall feedback on the event was positive with many making a positive remark about the Mentoring programme and how they plan to use it in their organisations.

Discussions centered on the lack of such training in Cyprus and what important steps are necessary to be able to support older workers and HR Managers in better age management.

Το Youth Empowerment and Innovation Project (YEIP), το οποίο χρηματοδοτείται από το πρόγραμμα Erasmus+, προσφέρει δωρεάν μία νέα εργαλειοθήκη που απευθύνεται σε άτομα που χαράσσουν πολιτική και αποσκοπεί στην αντιμετώπιση και στην πρόληψη της περιθωριοποίησης και της βίαιης ριζοσπαστικοποίησης των νέων στην Ευρώπη.

Το YEIP υλοποιείται από 18 εταίρους σε επτά κράτη της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης (Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, Ελλάδα, Κύπρος, Ιταλία, Πορτογαλία, Ρουμανία, Σουηδία) και σε τέσσερα διαφορετικά περιβάλλοντα (σχολεία, πανεπιστήμια, σωφρονιστικά καταστήματα, διαδίκτυο). Οι στόχοι είναι η δημιουργία και ο πρακτικός έλεγχος ενός καινοτόμου μοντέλου παρέμβασης, η εκπαίδευση, καθώς και η εφαρμογή ενός εργαλείου, με βάση τις αρχές της επανορθωτικής δικαιοσύνης, της θετικής ψυχολογίας και του Μοντέλου Καλής Ζωής.

Απώτερος στόχος του YEIP είναι να συμβάλει στην εφαρμογή της Στρατηγικής της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης για τη Νεολαία για την πρόληψη των παραγόντων που ενδέχεται να οδηγήσουν τους νέους στον κοινωνικό αποκλεισμό και στη βίαιη ριζοσπαστικοποίηση.

Η εργαλειοθήκη αποτελείται από θεωρητικά μοντέλα, ταινίες βίντεο, εργαλεία αναστοχασμού και εξωτερικούς πόρους, και περιλαμβάνει τέσσερα στοιχεία: κατανόηση του φαινομένου της βίαιης ριζοσπαστικοποίησης, θετική ψυχολογία και Μοντέλο Καλής Ζωής, ανταπόκριση στους νέους και προώθηση της συμμετοχής στους με γνώμονα το σεβασμό των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων, αντιμετώπιση της βίαιης ριζοσπαστικοποίησης μέσω της διευθέτησης συγκρούσεων και της κριτικής σκέψης.

Ο Δρ. Theo Gavrielides, Ιδρυτής και Διευθυντής του ιδρύματος IARS και Συντονιστής Υλοποίησης του YEIP, δήλωσε: «Η ριζοσπαστικοποίηση και ο εξτρεμισμός που οδηγούν σε βίαιες συμπεριφορές μας απασχολούν ολοένα και περισσότερο τα τελευταία χρόνια, ιδίως ως προς τις επιπτώσεις που έχουν στους νέους. Σε όλη την Ευρώπη και στα γειτονικά της κράτη υπάρχει ανάγκη για την επίδειξη ηγετικού πνεύματος και αποφασιστικότητας προκειμένου να αντιμετωπιστεί η περιθωριοποίηση των νέων ανθρώπων, έτσι ώστε να αποκατασταθεί η εμπιστοσύνη των πολιτών. Γι’ αυτό το λόγο, η εργαλειοθήκη θα λειτουργήσει ως βάση για την επίτευξη συστημικής αλλαγής, τόσο στο εθνικό επίπεδο, όσο και σε εκείνο της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης. Βάζοντας τους νέους ανθρώπους στο επίκεντρο της διαδικασίας πολιτικής επιρροής, επιτυγχάνουμε αποφάσεις που βασίζονται σε έγκυρες πληροφορίες. Μόνο μέσα από αυτή την προσέγγιση μπορούμε να επιτύχουμε πραγματική κοινωνική ένταξη των νέων».

Η Julia Patz, Μέλος του Youth Advisory Board του IARS, ανέφερε τα εξής: «Πιστεύω ότι είναι ενδιαφέρον να έχουμε μια εργαλειοθήκη για νέους ανθρώπους, η οποία φτιάχτηκε από άλλους νέους ανθρώπους. Πολλές φορές οι κυβερνήσεις και οι οργανισμοί δεν ρωτούν τους ανθρώπους που θα λάβουν την όποια βοήθεια τι πιστεύουν οι ίδιοι πως πρέπει να αλλάξει ώστε οι ζωές τους να γίνουν καλύτερες. Η εργαλειοθήκη του YEIP φτιάχτηκε ακούγοντας τους νέους και προωθώντας τη συμμετοχή τους μέσα από το πρίσμα των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων, ακριβώς για να εξυπηρετεί τους νέους και να ταιριάζει περισσότερο στις ανάγκες τους. Οι νέοι βρέθηκαν εξαρχής στην πρώτη γραμμή της ανάπτυξης του YEIP, με αποτέλεσμα η εργαλειοθήκη να είναι πρωτοποριακή από αυτή την άποψη».

Στο πλαίσιο του YEIP οι νέοι τέθηκαν επικεφαλής της δημιουργίας πολλών νέων εργαλείων. Έχοντας ενεργό ρόλο στο ερευνητικό σκέλος, και συζητώντας ομαδικά τις εμπειρίες, τις απόψεις και τις προτάσεις τους, μπορούν να επηρεάσουν αποφασιστικά τη λήψη αποφάσεων αναφορικά με την πρόληψη της βίαιης ριζοσπαστικοποίησης.

Αυτή η επιλογή υπήρξε το αποτέλεσμα μιας αντιστροφής της μέχρι σήμερα υφιστάμενης τάσης και αποσκοπεί στη δημιουργία πολιτικών πρόληψης που θα ταιριάζουν περισσότερο στους νέους.

Καρκασιαλίκιν (το) ουσ. {καρκαshαλλίκκι} η φασαρία, ο σαματάς, with a point, σημαίνει αναγνώριση της ανάγκης για συμμετοχή στα τοπικά κοινά, σημαίνει δυναμική και ζωντανή πόλη, πόλη βιώσιμη και δημοκρατική. Με θετικότητα μέσω των μουσικών, ζωντάνια μέσω των χρωμάτων δημιουργούμε συμμετοχή και πραγματική αίσθηση συνδημιουργίας και κοινής πορείας.

O Δήμος Στροβολου σε συνεργασία με το Κέντρο Προώθησης Έρευνας και Ανάπτυξης στην Εκπαιδευτική Τεχνολογία (CARDET) και την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση μέσω του Ευρωπαϊκού προγράμματος Walk the Global Walk, διοργανώνει την εκδήλωση Καρκασιαλίκιν with a point.

Η πορεία θα πραγματοποιηθεί σε συνεργασία με μαθητές από σχολεία από όλη την Κύπρο και ενήλικες και παιδιά από το Ανοικτό Σχολείο Δήμου Στροβόλου, όπως και όλους τους θετικούς ανθρώπους που θέλουν να περάσουν ένα όμορφο Σαββατιάτικό πρωινό!

Strovolos Municipality in collaboration with the international NGO CARDET and through the framework of the European project Walk the Global Walk, is happy to launch the event Καρκασιαλίκιν with a point.

The walk will take place with the participation of secondary school students participating in the project, kids and adults of Strovolos Open School, and any positive minded people who want to have a fun Saturday morning!

Yale School of Public Health and CARDET extend their collaboration

CARDET proudly announces the signing of an agreement with The Yale School of Public Health to extend their collaboration in the fields of research, education and development. The two institutions marked the extension of their partnership with the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the Dean of the Yale School of Public Health, Dr. Sten H. Vermund and CARDET’s Executive Director, Dr. Charalambos Vrasidas.

The MoU manifests the Yale School of Public Health’s and CARDET’s intention to further deepen a mutually beneficial collaboration that was created in 2015 and involves partnerships in education and exchange of expertise, best practices and bilateral support.

The renewed agreement provides the framework for the pursuit, planning and undertaking of joint actions and projects in the Euro-Mediterranean region and beyond. From 2015 to 2018, the two institutions collaborated successfully on several initiatives including the offering of the Open Education Series, hosting internships for Yale students in Cyprus, delivering online and face-to-face courses, publishing of a book on Principles and Practice of Multi-Site Randomized Controlled Trials in the Phase III Setting, and co-organized an international conference on health education and health reform.

“Cyprus is a cross-roads nation and CARDET is an experienced group of educational experts. The Yale School of Public Health looks forward to the continued creative partnership in graduate-level public health education”, Vermund said of the renewed partnership.

From his part, Mr. Vrasidas noted that “CARDET is truly honored to renew its collaboration with one of the best universities in the world capitalizing and building on the experience and capacity already developed through our respective and shared expertise. We firmly believe that the partnership will help elevate our capability to plan and undertake new innovative and effective initiatives in research, education, and development.”
