As part of the GetThere-Journey to Employment project, CARDET conducted a series of training events for employability educators and for young people who are looking to increase their employability skills.
The events both took place at the University of Nicosia with great success. The workshops included interactive activities for the learning of employability skills such as Problems Solving and Communication. One such activity was the ‘Egg-Catcher’ activity which aimed to teach young people how to think ahead in problem-solving situations. It involved constructing a ‘landing-pillow’ made out of balloons, paper and straws for an egg to be dropped onto from a height of 2 metres. The overall experience of the course was a positive one. Participants showed great enthusiasm regarding the two modules that were covered: Problem-Solving and Communication. To quote some of them: “Such workshops should be offered more regularly”, “This was super creative and fun”, and “I learned a lot in a very non-boring way”.
According to both groups there is great need for courses that target employability skills.
These sessions provided young people the opportunity to receive professional training on skills that are necessary in today’s competitive market. The course was well-received and respondents showed high engagement with the activities.
On a national scale the field of professional development is still at its early stages. The GetThere project directly addresses the gaps in this area and provides grounds for further development for both employability educators and young people.
