Cyprus Education Summit: Setting a framework for the digital transformation of education

Cyprus Education Summit 2021 sought to offer the forum for the presentation and analysis of present realities, developments and opportunities in the field of education through digital transformation and the development of digital skills. Leading experts, researchers and professionals from the field contributed in this direction with their presentations and their participation in the conference.

The workings of the Conference commenced with welcome remarks from the Executive Director of CARDET, Dr Charalambos Vrasidas, the Rector of the University of Nicosia Dr Philippos Pouyioutas and his Excellency the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Mr Prodromos Prodromou. Consecutively, the first session of the Conference, through presentations from Themis Christophidou, Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture, Kyriakos Kokkinos, Deputy Minister for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, and George Zisimos, Head of Policy Programming Unit, at the European Training Foundation delved into the policies, challenges and opportunities in Cyprus and Europe via the promotion of digital skills.

In succession, the second session of the Conference focused on the promotion of digital skills in Cyprus Education. Specifically, Dr. Athina Michaelidou, Director of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, presented the actions taken to facilitate the digital transformation of the Educational System, while Dr Efi Onisiforou, of CARDET and the University of Nicosia, illustrated the contribution of STEM education in the development of digital skills. The workings of the Conference were concluded with a panel discussion with the participation of representatives of educational organisations.

During the conference, the speakers stressed the need for investment and introduction of digital tools in the field of education as well as the need to promote and enhance digital skills that are now considered vital. In addition, an in-depth analysis of the policies and efforts of educational institutions for the transition of the educational system of Cyprus to the digital age as well as the contribution of STEM education.

The Cyprus Education Summit is held on an annual basis with the ultimate goal of exploring important aspects of education and training, but also of highlighting important actions and initiatives in the field. In this direction, the conference promoted the exchange of knowledge, views and experiences between experts, researchers and professionals from the field of Education.
