Air pollution is the number one environmental cause of death in the EU, responsible for 406,000 premature deaths. The project AIRTHINGS, aims to foster sustainable development and mitigate climate change in the region, through joint cooperation measures and transfer of experience among the six project partners. The project will supply and install 100 Internet of Things intelligent air quality measuring sensors evenly separated between all five countries, providing new, real time data through the internet. A network of connected cities will be established, monitoring air quality, alongside with cloud based "Open data" system with predictive analytics and advanced machine learning capabilities. The project's main result is expected to be the reduction of air pollutants (e.g. PM, NO2, CO) in the air and compliance with the Air Quality Directive 2008/50/EC stringent value limits within participating regions.
