Migration in the Media

The Department of Communications and Internet Studies of the Cyprus University of Technology along with CARDET, and in cooperation with the Center for Community Media in Cyprus (CCMC) co-hosted a seminar entitled “Migration in the Media” on June 30, 2014. The event took place at the Journalists’ House in Nicosia and featured a variety of attendees as well as a number of specific policy makers. Its main aim was to present the media role in addressing issues relating to Third-Country nationals (TCN) and immigrants in general. In particular, the seminar was organized around five main themes for the presentations that covered the following topics:

  1. Media and Migration: Comparative analysis of four countries
  2. Cyprus’ Media Press and Migration
  3. Cyprus’ Media Television and Migration
  4. Journalists perceptions on TCN and immigrants
  5. ΤCN’s perceptions  

The presentations were followed by a round table discussion with specific recommendations on how to improve the current situation. The round table included representatives such as media executives, journalists, policy makers in the media, NGOs and TCNs.
